The Record, in the Open

The Library

Every substantive question this project has put to a public body, in one table you can search and sort: what was asked, of whom, when, and what came back. Click any row to read the plain summary behind it.

Plain Rules

Answered means a substantive answer was given. Partial answer means something substantive came back and something is still missing. Asked means the question is open: no answer is due yet, or none has come and no date was promised. Past due is used only when a promised date, or the date the law required a decision by, has passed with no answer.

Under the California Public Records Act, an agency generally has 10 days to decide whether it will produce records, and may extend that once by up to 14 days, in writing. The dates in this table are tracked against those rules and against the dates agencies promised in writing.

The documents behind these entries (agency letters, emails, and productions) are summarized here, not posted. To request a document, email [email protected] and name the entry. Requests are reviewed one at a time, and entries and documents may be summarized or withheld at the project's discretion.
